Lieutenant Wu Yazzi
It was an exceptionally rainy monsoon season On July 7, 2148 Wu Yìzé was born. He was not exactly a surprise to his aging parents Hàoyú and Eu-Muh though he was four months early. As with most premature babies he was extremely small, and his lungs and eyes were underdeveloped. He was allowed to go home after a month, and he had already started to thrive exceeding the doctor’s expectations. His parents, especially his father, pushed his development trying everything he could to get his last son to be of, “some sort of value.”
Having been born into a traditional Chinese Family, Yìzé was to take over the family business, Martial arts, once he grew up and being so small wasn’t what his father had hoped for. He was one of 6 children, the last for the aging couple. His eldest brother, Da, along with Jaw-Long were part of the Starfleet marines. Gang, the brother closest in age, had served as part of the new Starfleet as a Security Officer and was killed in the line of duty. The little boy had only one sibling living at home, his sister, Jia which was only five years older to him. She is the one that gave him his nickname of Tùzi which means “Rabbit.”
His father was a well distinguished martial arts teacher, and his grandfather was responsible for over fifty kwoon, or martial arts schools. With help from his sister, he gained strength and his raspatory system had become totally developed and working properly. Although his vision was perfect, he had to worry about retinal detachment and experienced ocular pain. These two issues Yìzé will deal with for the rest of his life.
At age 5, Yìzé started martial arts training and excelled in it. By the age of seven he was participating in competitions and winning. If he finished at anything less than first place overall, his father would be disappointed and that pushed the boy even harder to make his father proud.
In school he did well with the help of his mother, a college level teacher, which only had to coax as Yìzé was naturally smart. School was fun for him up until his second year of high school when a Li Zixin found out about his martial arts training and decided to make an example of the smaller and younger boy. To his surprise his best plans failed, and he and his gang were the ones that were no match for the well trained Yìzé.
After the organized gang attack on their son, his parents decided teaching him at home might be a better option. This gave Yìzé both private tutoring and additional time in training for his martial arts. In 2167, Yìzé won one of the most prestigious mixed martial arts competitions much to his father’s joy. The following year 2168, he was accepted into Starfleet Academy to become a security officer but not before his last competition on May 18. Again, he won first place but not by a wide enough margin to satisfy his father. It would be his last formal martial arts completion.
Starfleet Academy in New York City was an exciting time for the young cadet. It was Yìzé first experience living in such proximity to a major city and it first it was intimidating. After several trips into New York Yìzé began to feel more comfortable with it but still preferred the more rural almost wilderness settings of his home. His mother was killed in a hovercraft accident his junior year. His father blamed him for not being there when it happened.
During is senior year Yìzé took part in a training exercise. It was to take place in area in Arizona, United States and was to be a simulation of a crashed starship. It would be the senior Cadet’s job to rescue the survivors, identify the cause of the crash and secure the area. Commander Germy Martin was to be in charge. What actually happened was nothing like the planned activity. The cadets were taken to a Class M planet instead of Arizona. It was not cleared for use but that didn’t seem to make much difference to the Commander. No commissioned officer were on the planet with them as observers. The spacecraft was an old freighter they had simply been dropped on the surface. No cadets or others were assigned to be the dead and wounded survivors. The starship USS Forerunner which had brought them left orbit within minutes of the last cadet transporting.
Within minutes members of the group cadets began disappearing. When there bodies were found it was obvious they had been eaten by a large reptile of some sorts. Seeing the starship that brought them had left orbit there was no way with what communication devices they had to contact the ship. The Cadet that was to be in charge of the event was dead and Yìzé assumed command setting up a secure area inside a cave and placing part of the damaged freighter over the door. Every fifteen minutes attempts were being made to contact the starship that brought them, but it was not until the next day that contact was made.
Yìzé was blamed for the incident by Commander. He was thrown in the ship’s brig up his orders. and Yìzé was charged with breaking various Starfleet protocol, specifically when dealing with the discovery of a new species. As the board of enquire convened for Commander Martin, Yìzé was, and many other cadets were called to testify. All alleged charges against Yìzé were dropped but Commander Martin was Court-Martialed.
After Graduating the Academy, he decided to change directions and become a counselor. Yìzé was accepted into the New Darwin Training center and Hospital. Once graduated, Yìzé became a staff counselor at the hospital. He had been passed over for promotion several times and getting a transfer to a starship proved to be nonstarter thanks to the records held in his personnel file.
Finally, Yìzé was able to transfer to the USS Venture and serve as the Chief Counselor.
Personality & Traits
If you were to meet Yìzé, you would find him a warm, outgoing person that exudes confidence. He is often thought of as a servant leader, meaning he is always placing others first, even in his leadership and drawing the best out of every individual. Many that have worked under him describe him as being like a father or caring parent though you will never here Dr. Wu describe himself as that.
Among his peers, he is thoughtful and highly intelligent with, “wisdom far beyond his years,” yet he is quick to point out that the knowledge or wisdom he possesses was learned from others. Yìzé is very skilled in mental health counseling and continues to study and learn all that he can about his profession. He is also a skilled help care provider, but he would find it hard to admit that himself. Yìzé was taught to respect everyone regardless of rank, wealth, or station. After joining Starfleet, he has tried unlearning the formal cultural forms of showing respect such as bowing. At this point, he has managed to replace bowing with a simple nod.
Having been born with the disadvantages of brought on by a premature birth, Yìzé learned early the values of perseverance, determination, and fortitude. Having studied Wushu, or martial arts, under his father for as long as he did, Yìzé has allowed him to overcome many of the physical disadvantages one might expect.
This does not mean Yìzé is a pushover by any means, he can speak his mind when he needs to and can be confrontational to those who overstep their boundaries. He has been known to intervene on behalf of others far more often than for himself. When frustrated, Yìzé would much rather take his frustrations out in the gym than verbally or physically with anyone knowing words, once spoken cannot be taken back.
As a counselor, Yìzé is kind, compassionate and caring to his patients though he is not a pushover. He seeks to guide them through a mental healing process that will help them grow as a person and move on from where they are. Wu takes his position very seriously and wants to do the best he possibly can for every patient.
